Pics from the Nurburgring

Postby Paul » Mon Aug 08, 2011 8:58 pm

It was my stag do at the weekend, and we went to the Ring.

Left at about 10.30 on thursday. Was planning on leaving at 9 or so but the Bandit 1200 was in desperate need of some tlc, so instead of loading the trailer weds night we serviced it. Loading the trailer was a PITA as it was pissing it down.

Picked up another car along the way, then to the ferry port. Sea France had me on the boat, my car, trailer and 3 other people for £70 each way, bargain.

Thursday night was spent at Bikers Loft. about an hour and a bit from calais, and one of the best places I've ever been. It's basically a converted warehouse, with rooms around the edge and the middle left open to park the bikes in. If youre in that area there its the only choice. Great bar too, stayed open just for us till we were done (about 2am)

Friday we drove to Germany. Took forever as the towing limit is 100kph. Rolled up to the hotel at about 4. Stayed at a place called Sliders Guest House, a converted house with loads of room, beer in the fridge and most importantly, a fully equipped bike workshop in the garage free to guests. The owner Brendan had 4 R1's in there for himself, and his track car was in the garden.

Friday night was the tracks evening session. Track was open 5 till 7.30, so we planned on taking the cars for a sighting lap or two before the bikes on saturday. We got there at 5.15, and it was closed for an accident. Some merc had hit the wall, dropped its coolant and a couple of bikes had slipped on it. 2 towtrucks, 2 ambulances, and the cleanup crew couldnt get it all sorted by 7.30, and we all went home.

Saturday the track opened at 8, we got there about 10. Took the car out for a couple of laps, full car for people who came for the trip and my little mondeo was the slowest thing out there, but I still drove the ass off it!

Spent the evening in a restaurant called the Comfy Corner, proper good steak!

Then it started hammering with rain again! We waited it out for about an hour, and as soon as there was a break in the clouds we grabbed the bikes and got on. Surface was pretty slippy so more of a sunday jaunt than a track blast, but got round...

Literally 15 seconds off the end of the lap it rained yet again. Properly hammering down for the rest of the day, I didnt get another lap on the bike. Sold one of my prebought laps to my mate in his car, and then went again in my car to use them up.

Spent the evening in Hotel am Tiergarten, owned by the Schmitz family, whose daughter you'll know as Sabine, Steak again - ace!

My ugly mug on the R1, and my usual riding mates on the B1200 and the Thundersport doing the obligatory 'sign picture'.

Drove the whole trip back on Sunday, left at 9.30am, got to the ferry at 3pm, home by 8pm. Whole trip cost about £400 each after splitting the fuel and ferry costs, couldnt recommend Bikers Loft or Sliders enough, and without a doubt one of the best biking weekends I've ever done, and have the stickers on the car and the bike to show for it.

Next year we're doing Stelvio pass - can't wait!

Not really, track was damp and there was some standing water under the trees (pretty much everywhere), but got to give it a bit of stick in places, got 162 on the home straight before the braking markers :)

Definately going to go again, and maybe take a few forum members too...
